I have assigned a science assignment. The students have been researching a planet in class for the past week. I have asked them to demonstrate what they have learned. How they do this is up to them, they can write a report, make an iMovie, create a poster or model, or any other project they would like to do. The assignment is due on Thursday, April 26 th.
I have assigned a project/report about a planet. The students can choose how they would like to share what they have learned. They can write or type a report, make an iMovie, make a poster, make a model, or anything else they can think of. It will be due on April 26th.
Field trip to the Museum of Science and Nature. We will be exploring their exhibits on space. We will also be watching a planetarium show on the wildest weather in the solar system. I will need 5 chaperones for my class, we are limited in the number of people we can take, since it is a busy day for the museum. I will take the first five to email me with a request to be a chaperone. The trip will take place on Friday, May 4th.
Poetry Coffee House - this is a presentation we are creating for you. The students will recite poetry and share some of their other talents. This will take place in the afternoon on May 10th, in the classroom. You are invited to attend.
I have been out sick a few days and we seem to have quite a few students who are not feeling well either. There were eight of my twenty nine students absent today. I will not be assigning any spelling words or homework for this week. Hopefully this will give all of us a chance to rest and get well. Have a wonderful week.
Conferences will be held on the evening of March 21st and the morning of March 22nd. If you have not yet scheduled a time, please find the sheets just inside the front door of the school and sign up for a time slot. I look forward to seeing all of your then.
Your student's grades can be accessed through Infinite Campus. The grades posted at this time will be their final grade for the third quarter, unless they turn in missing assignments in the next few days. (The report cards will be printed on March 16th, so the 15th will be the final day to turn in late assignments.)
This week the lunch schedule for the school will be changed due to the TCAP testing. Third grade will not be eating lunch until 12:45, instead of 10:55. We will have a snack time in the morning instead of the afternoon. A healthy snack will be important to get your child through the day.
If your child will be attending Legacy Academy next year, be sure to return your letters of intent and consumable fee to reserve their spot in 4th grade. The forms are due by Monday, February 27th. The fees are due at that time as well. The consumable fee is $50 for one child, $75 for two, and $100 for three or more. You can also use the same form to let the school know if your child will not be returning.
Third grade has finished taking the reading portion of the TCAP test. The test allows one hour for each of the two sessions. Most students need much less time than that, and when they are finished they have to sit quietly for the rest of the time. The students worked hard, and were quiet and respectful of others after they finished. Now we have to wait for the results.
While talking to parents during the Valentine party, I realized that for many of the families in this class, this is your first experience with state testing. One thing you may not be aware of is how long it takes to get the results. The results for this reading test will be sent to the school in May. The writing and math portions of the test will be given in a few weeks, and those results will not be sent until August.
Unfortunately these tests are not like the MAP tests where we see the results immediately. Many portions of the TCAP are hand scored, and all students in public school in 3rd through 10th grade are taking these tests during the same few weeks. This results in the long time period between the testing and the scores.
The two sessions of writing will be given on Wednesday, March 7 and the two sessions of math will be given on Thursday, March 8. Please try not to schedule things for those mornings.
TCAP week is here!
Third grade will be taking the TCAP reading test on Wednesday morning, February 15th. The first session will begin promptly at 8:15. Please make every effort to have your student in the classroom by 8:00 that morning. The children will feel less stressed if they are not rushing and can prepare with the group. It is important that we begin on time. We have two sessions to take that morning and if we are not on schedule it will affect the lunch schedule for the entire school.
If your child is not in the classroom at the time we begin, they will not be able to test that day and will need to do make-up testing the next day. The state has very specific rules about the administration of these tests.
There will be no spelling homework this week due to the testing.
Your child's homework for Tuesday night will be to get a good night's sleep and eat a healthy breakfast. They need to come to class ready to concentrate and do their best work. Being the day after the Valentine party I would like to ask that you limit your child's sugar intake the night before and the morning of the test. Eating candy before school that day will not help your child do well on the test when their sugar level drops. Eating a hearty breakfast and bringing a healthy snack to eat between tests will help ensure their success.
On another note, our class is responsible for the morning announcements this week. Since it is a four day week, I divided the class into four groups and assigned each group with a specific day and a portion of Alice in Wonderland to incorporate into the announcements. They came up with their own plan and created the content. I am very happy with the results, this is a very creative class and they had a lot of fun doing it. I have attached the link to the Monday morning announcements. I will attach the others as they are posted and ready to go. They will also be on the Legacy Website on the day they

Thank you so much for all of the birthday wishes. I really appreciate all that you did.
I am so sorry for the confusion with the iPads going home. In the morning the IT guy told us they would be set to go this afternoon. In the afternoon I received information from Mr. Cross that there had been a problem with the filtering of the internet and we would be delayed yet again. The administration wants to be sure that the students are protected when using the internet at home, and had to take these steps to insure your children's safety. I am so sorry that they were disappointed again, but they will be going home as soon as possible.
Thank you for your patience with this as we work out the details.
