Interactive Self-Study Module: Using a Cubic EOS to Determine Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium
Overview:

This module uses screencasts and an interactive simulation to explain how to apply equations of states for mixtures. It then provides example problems to allow the user to test themselves. We suggest reviewing the EOS of a single component module before using the learning resources in the following order:

  1. Attempt to answer the multiple choice ConcepTest and solve the example problem before watching the screencast or working with the simulation.
  2. Watch the screencast that describes how to use an equation of state to calculate fugacity and answer the question within the screencast.
  3. Use the interactive simulation to further understand isotherms for the Peng-Robinson equation of state for mixtures.
  4. Try to solve the example problem before watching the solution in the screencast.
  5. Answer the ConcepTests.
Motivation:

This module is intended for a Thermodynamics course.

Before studying this module, you should be able to:

After studying this module, you should be able to:
  1. Apply mixing rules to determine parameters to use in a cubic EOS.
  2. Apply a cubic equation of state (EOS) to determine bubble and dew points for multi-component mixtures.
