Interactive Self-Study Module: Partial Molar Quantities

Overview:

This module uses screencasts and interactive simulations to explain partial molar quantities. It then provides example problems and step-by-step quiz simulations to allow the user to test themselves. We suggest using the learning resources in the following order:

  1. Attempt to answer the multiple choice ConcepTest and solve the example problem before watching the screencast or working with the simulation.
  2. Watch the screencasts that present the definition of partial molar quantities and show how to determine them.
  3. Use the interactive simulation to further understand partial molar quantities.
  4. Try to solve the example problem screencast before watching the solution in the screencast.
  5. Answer the ConcepTests.

        This module is intended for a Thermodynamics course.

After studying this module, you should be able to:
  1. Explain the physical meaning of a partial molar quantity.
  2. Determine the partial molar quantities for a binary mixture, given a plot of the mixture property as a function of mole fraction. 
  3. Given an analytical expression for the mixture property as a function of mole fractions, be able to calculate partial molar quantities.  
  4. Determine the excess molar property for a binary mixture, given a plot of the mixture property as a function of mole fraction. 
  5. Calculate a mixture property at a given composition from its partial molar quantities.
