Interactive Self-Study Module: Manometry

This module uses a screencast and an interactive simulation to understand manometers. The screencast is used to show the different types of manometers and how equations can be derived to convert between heights and pressures. An interactive simulation and example problems allow the user to test themselves. We suggest using the learning resources in the following order:

  1. Attempt to answer the multiple-choice ConcepTest and solve the example problem before watching the screencast or working with the simulation.
  2. Watch the screencast that describes different types of manometers and answer the question within the screencast.
  3. Use the interactive simulation to further understand how to design a differential U-tube manometer.
  4. Try to solve the example problems before watching the solutions in the screencasts.
  5. Answer the ConcepTests.

Manometers are the most basic form of pressure measuring devices that can be used.

This module is intended for fluid mechanics courses.

Before studying this module, you should:

  • Be able to define and convert between gauge pressure and absolute pressure.
  • Be able to derive the equation of motion for a fluid at rest with no shear stresses.
  • Know the hydrostatic pressure equation.

After studying this module, you should be able to:
  • Understand the different types of manometers and the situations when to use each type.
  • Calculate the height of fluid when given a pressure difference.
  • Calculate a pressure difference when given heights in a manometer.
