Interactive Self-Study Module: Clapeyron, Clausius-Clapeyron, and Antoine Equations
Overview:

This module uses screencasts and interactive simulations to explain the Clapeyron, Clausius-Clapeyron, and Antoine equations. It then provides example problems to allow the user to test themselves. We suggest using the learning resources in the following order:

  1. Attempt to answer the multiple-choice ConcepTest and solve the example problem before watching the screencast or working with the simulation.
  2. Watch the screencast that derives the Clapeyron and Clausius-Clapeyron equations and answer the questions within the screencast.
  3. Use the interactive simulation to compare the Clausius-Clapeyron and Antoine equations.
  4. Try to solve the three example problems before watching the solutions in the screencasts.
  5. Answer the ConcepTests.

  • Calculate the saturation pressure at a given temperature using Antoine's equation.
  • Calculate the saturation pressure at a given temperature using the Clausius-Clapeyron equation (for vapor-liquid or vapor-solid equilibrium).
  • Apply the Clapeyron equation to solid-liquid equilibrium to determine equilibrium pressure as a function of temperature.
  • Determine which component has the higher heat of vaporization on a plot of ln(Psat) versus inverse temperature.
