Bernoulli's Equation: Interactive Simulation

Simulation: Flow through a Constriction in a Pipe

Using Bernoulli's equation, determine how the density, pressures, diameters, and distance between the two areas affect the velocities in a vertical pipe with a constriction.

Try to answer these questions before determining the answer with the simulation:

  1. When the diameter at the top of the pipe increases with constant velocity, does the velocity in the constriction increase or decrease?
  2. What happens to the velocities when the fluid density increases? When the fluid density decreases?
  3. What happens to the velocities when the distance between the two areas increases?  When the distance decreases?
