Session Descriptions

SESSION A (8:30 – 10:00)

1) Merging the Curriculum in Combined Grade Classrooms K /1, 1 /2, 2 /3 with Maria Limpright
This session will engage teachers of combined grades (K/1, 1/2, 2/3) in a facilitated discussion about how they are merging their grade level curriculum.  Come network and share ideas with other teachers working with the same combined grades!

2) Assessing Curricular Competencies Using Digital Media (Grade 4 – 12) with Deirdre DeGagné
A presentation on how teachers could assess curricular competencies using digital media. The focus will be on the Adobe suite of Apps: Spark Video, Spark Post and Spark Page.

3) Outcomes-Based Assessment (Grade 9 – 12) with Christine Ross

A description of the process of adapting the new English 9 curriculum (with some reference to the draft English 12) to outcomes-based assessment; as well as the process of arriving at a final grade.

4) Creating Critical Thinking Opportunities (Grade 3 – 7) with Kaylie Rooke

Thinking and inquiry are at the heart of the redesigned curriculum.  This session will show teachers how they can facilitate more critical thinking opportunities. We will introduce a variety of thinking routines, discuss what they are and how they can be used to create more thoughtful classrooms.  Participants will spend time brainstorming how to incorporate the use and assessment of these thinking routines into their current classroom practice.

5) Implementing Career Education Curriculum (Grade 10 - 12) with Jennifer Bennato & Michelle Myers

In this session we will explore the latest updates for the two required courses:  Career Life Education 10 and Career Life Connections 12 and share how myBlueprint’s Education Planner supports the revised currirulum.

6) Genre Writing Using Grade Specific Learning Standards (Grade 3 – 5) with Sandra VanHove

This session will include a series of genre writing lessons whose demonstration of learning is an Adobe Spark slide show using IPads. It ties in the Aboriginal lens as the children create a slide show on "How to Make a Pictograph."

7) Working with the L1 and L2 Learner with Michelle Gill

Wondering what to do with your L1 and L2 students?  Learn about an inquiry oriented language arts strategy that uses pictures to elicit words from student’s listening and speaking vocabulary.

SESSION B (10:20 – 11:50)

2) Student Self-Assessment of Core Competencies (Grade K – 12) with Donna Wright

An open discussion for educators that would like to brainstorm ideas regarding the self-assessment of the CORE Competencies.

3) Intercultural Competencies (Grade K – 12) with Kathleen Weinkam

Presenting intercultural communication as an important understanding in our increasingly internationalized environment. Learn the fundamental understandings about intercultural communication. Practical applications for the classroom context applied to both interactions between students and interactions between teachers and students. Tied to new curriculum cultural competency.

4) Self-Regulation and the Core Competencies (Grade K – 5) with Tawnie Hildebrandt & Adriana Belsher

This workshop offers the next step in developing your students' ability to self-regulate by looking at practical ways to integrate the Emotional Domain into your classroom.

6) Scaffold for Success with Michelle Gill

This session will focus on helping ELL teachers draw out key concepts in the redesigned curriculum and develop scaffolds that support reading and writing.  Come prepared to share ideas and network with other ELL teachers.

SESSION C (8:30 – 11:50)

1)Learning How to Unpack with the New Curriculum While Using an Online Planning Tool (Grade 6 – 9) with Karl Wodtke

This session serves to give teachers an overview of a revised framework for how to begin organizing units around the new curriculum.Teachers attending this session will learn how to select content standards and curricular competencies and unpack them, to begin to generate success criteria. The session will be organized into two parts of unpacking and an introduction of learning how to write success criteria.  In conjunction, teachers will be using an online tool that will help them organize and simplify the unpacking and planning process.

2) What do Curricular Competencies Mean Anyway? (Grade 6 – 8) with Lynette Power

Many teachers are struggling to make sense of the Curricular Competencies. Come collaborate with other teachers and unpack the Curricular Competencies for background knowledge and academic language in your selected subject area.  This session will also help teachers to develop assessment criteria for the competencies they unpack.

Many teachers are struggling to make sense of the Curricular Competencies. Come collaborate with other teachers and unpack the Curricular Competencies for background knowledge and academic language in your selected subject area. This session will also help teachers to develop assessment criteria for the competencies they unpack.

4) L2 and the Revised Curriculum with Duncan Hazlewood

Unpacking, planning and assessing the revised curriculum for Core French and Additional Language teachers.  Working session for secondary teachers of Punjabi, Spanish, Japanese, German, and Core French.

5) Developing a Growth Mindset through the Curriculum Redesign with Jennifer Cox

Participants will be engaged in a discussion about how growth mindsets can have a positive impact on learning as it pertains to the Redesigned Curriculum.  Through an exploration of the philosophy of growth mindsets, participants will better understand how they can be incorporated into practice in the curriculum.
