Welcome to the 2016 - 2017 school year!
Hello, my name is Rachelle Hurd. I am so excited to be your child's Third Grade Teacher this school year! I am anxiously waiting to meet my students and parents.

This is my fourth year teaching, but my first year at Westside. I taught third and fourth grade previously at River Place Elementary. I have a Master's in reading and literacy from Concordia University.

A Little Bit More About Me

I grew up in California where I lived on a 3- acre horse ranch. In 2003 I enlisted into the US Army and was stationed at Ft. Hood, TX. As a Staff Sergeant in the Army I was fully trained in biomedical equipment repair and was a small arms instructor. I finished my Bachelor of Science while on two separate deployments to Iraq. I decided that I had accomplished all that I wanted in the Army and now I am pursuing a life long dream in education. I am a third generation teacher and I am really excited to see what this new school year has in store for us.

My free time is spent reading books, cycling, walking with my dogs, and cooking. Thank you so much for entrusting your child to me. I am looking forward to a terrific year!

Birthday: October 24th  (Please No Sweets this year, trying to eat healthy to reach a personal goal.)

We will be using classroom computers, Chrome Books, and iPads, as well as visiting our computer lab for various learning opportunities this year.  While headphones are provided in the computer lab, it is recommended that each child have his/her own headphones or ear buds for health reasons.  If possible, please have your child bring the headphones/ear buds to school in a zip lock baggy marked with his/her name.

The Seven Habits of Happy Kids

This year we will be working on the Seven Habits (+1) of Happy Kids.  Those seven habits are:

1.     Be proactive

2.     Begin with the End in Mind

3.     Put First Things First

4.     Think Win-Win

5.     Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood

6.     Synergize

7.     Sharpen the Saw

8.     Find Your Voice

If you are interested in incorporating these habits in your home, I recommend the book, “Seven Habits of Highly Effective Families,” by Stephen R. Covey.

Approved Volunteers

Education is a group effort. We love to have parents volunteer to help us during the school year.  In order to be an approved volunteer, you must apply EACH and EVERY school year.  Please visit http://www.leanderisd.org/default.aspx?name=com.volunteer to reactivate your application or to apply for the first time!
