What does the school counselor do and how can she help?

Leander ISD’s school counselors help children find success in school by promoting academic, career,

personal and social development. I collaborate with students, parents, teachers, and administrators to identify and remove barriers that may impede student achievement and personal growth.

Services I provide.....
*classroom guidance lessons
*individual and small group counseling
*parent and teacher consultation

The theoretical approach I use most in the school setting is Solution Focused Therapy. The Solution Focused Brief Therapy Association outlines three ingredients of SF counseling which are talk centered around student's concerns, time together focused on co-constructing new meanings around student’s concerns, and specific techniques to co-construct a preferred future which may involve drawing on past success to resolve current issues. Personal strengths and past success are what students can draw from to give them the confidence to move forward and find solutions to their problems. I believe most students have within them the ability to solve their own problems. At times, students may need counseling services to discover solutions and move toward positive change.
