Welcome to 6th Grade Social Studies!

Hello Stiles Spartans! I look forward to getting to know each of you this year as we explore many of the cultures that make up our world. Sixth grade Social Studies is called World Cultures and Geography. We will be focusing on the geography, history, governments, economies, and ways of life in the various culture regions of the world. Each six weeks will have its own learning matrix, which will show our learning targets. In addition, each six weeks will have a new knowledge map, which will include the basic facts on which we will build our learning. These will always be available at the beginning of each six weeks on this website and in each student's interactive notebook (INB). An important tool we use daily is a student's planner, either in the form of a spiral or a device. Each day we spend class time filling out needed information. Please ask your child often to see his/her planner or device.

Interactive Notebook
This spiral will become an important part of our course. I highly recommend a spiral with a durable plastic cover so it stays together throughout the year. Guidelines for students' INBs include:
*No pages are to be torn out or used for anything other than what is assigned in SS.
*Each page is numbered, and a table of contents is kept.
*No papers should be loose or hanging out the sides.
Lots of color and creativity will go into our INB's. Students will bring them home from time to time to show parents and to study for their quizzes and tests..
It is important that this spiral is brought to class each day, along with scissors, glue, and colored pencils.

Materials Needed Daily

Pocket Folder
SS Spiral (durable plastic covers are great, if possible)
A gluestick or bottle of liquid glue (Extras are useful as we use these a LOT!)
Thin markers(useful,not required)
Pens/Pencils/Looseleaf Paper 10+ sheets in pocket folder
Colored Pencils, required
hand-held pencil sharpener with a receptacle
scissors, all included in a pencil bag to brought to every class. Please replenish supplies throughout the year.
Our Units of Study
We will be studying the culture regions of the world, including N. Africa & SW Asia, Europe, Asia, Russia, Africa South of the Sahara, N.America, S. America, and Australia,  Within each unit we will study that region's culture, geography, history, government, and economy.

Make-up Work Policy
If a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to see me before or after school or at the beginning of class to find out what (s)he missed. School policy allows one day for each absent day to make up work. If you know ahead of time that your child will be absent please let me know, and I will do my best to gather his/her work in advance.
Grading Policy
Tests: 25%
Quizzes/Projects: 65%.
Daily Work/Homework: 10%.

*Retake/Redo Policy: Students may be allowed to re-do a daily assignment for up to a 80%. They may also retake a test or quiz and make up to an 80%. Redoing must be initiated within one week of not turning in a daily assignment or receiving a grade back on an assessment. Certain restrictions apply on retaking assessments, including the student must not be missing any work. Redo's must be done outside of class, and assessments will need to be retaken before or after school or during lunch.

Please refer to my website's calendar and other information provided. I update it often. Your child's planner should also be an excellent source regarding homework, tests, and projects and is the responsibility of the student to keep updated daily.

Please make sure you have an email address on file in the school office and on TxConnect (our gradebook), if possible. In addition, I urge you to sign up for parent connect and my REMIND101 so you can monitor your child's grades often. This a great tool for students to view too. You may contact the school registrar to receive your log in info.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I am here for you and your child!
