New Math Standards Overview
In 2012, the State Board of Education approved revisions for the mathematics standards to be fully implemented in 2014-15 for Kindergarten through Grade 8 and in 2015-16 for Grades 9-12. Due to these changes, LISD began implementing these revised standards in K-2 and transition plans in Grades 3-8 in the 2013-14 school year, as well as transition plans for Grade 9-12 in the 2014-15 school year.
The revised math TEKS will affect all grade levels, Kindergarten through Pre-Calculus. The content of the revised TEKS includes concepts similar to those in the previous TEKS, brand new TEKS, and concepts previously taught in other grade levels (typically coming from higher grade levels).
What are TEKS and standards?
The TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) are the state standards for what learners, at each grade level and in each subject, should know and be able to do. The State’s accountability testing system- STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) tests learners on this knowledge in Grades 3 - 8 & Algebra I.
Why are we making Math changes?
In April 2012, the State Board of Education (SBOE) approved revision for the mathematics TEKS to be fully implemented by the 2014-15 for grades K-8 and 2015-16 for grades 9-12.
From The Commissioner's Draft of the Texas Mathematics Standards:
"The mathematics Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) specify the expectations for what Texas students should know and be able to do in mathematics. The current mathematics TEKS have served Texas citizens well, identifying clear expectations and setting high standards; however, the world is changing and many careers now require more and different mathematics, including an emphasis on mathematical reasoning and complex problem-solving. The Texas College and Career Readiness Standards, published by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the TEA in 2009, set a high bar for preparing all Texas students for success in the workplace. The time has come for a new generation of TEKS for mathematics."
The State Board of Education (SBOE) mandates the curriculum standards (TEKS) for all schools in Texas. The SBOE “Instructional Review” committee regularly reviews curriculum standards and makes revisions that all schools must implement. The “Instructional Review” committee is comprised of educators, parents, business and industry representatives, and employers.

What steps did Leander ISD take to prepare for the implementation of the new Revised (2012) Math standards?
During the 2012-13 school year, LISD teachers and Instructional Services personnel started the curriculum writing process to address these changes and transition between the previous TEKS with the revised TEKS.
For the 2013-14 school year, teachers began implementing the revised Math TEKS in kindergarten, first and second grades and transition lessons were incorporated into the curriculum for grades 3 - 8 to address anticipated gaps.
In the 2014-15 school year, the new Math TEKS for grade 3 - 8 take full affect and the STAAR exam will test these standards. In grades 9-12, transition lessons were incorporated into the curriculum to address anticipated gaps.
In the 2015-16 school year, the new Math TEKS for grade 9 - 12 take full affect and the STAAR EoC exam for Algebra I will begin to test these standards.
How are the educators being trained to implement these new standards?
All LISD mathematics teachers have participated in revised TEKS trainings beginning in 2012-2013 and continue to participate in specific professional development to help tackle the challenges of the revised standards.
