Summary of Study
The League of Women Voters of New Jersey supports reparations for Black/African Americans and believes the legacy of slavery still impacts Black/African Americans in New Jersey today. In addition to financial investments, these reparations focus areas include, but are not limited to, policy reforms in the following areas: Housing, Criminal Justice, Education, Health Care, and Economics.
Position History
The League of Women Voters of New Jersey approved a position in support of Reparations in 2025, after an almost two-year study. Prior to the position approval, the League of Women Voters of New Jersey was active on some reparations issues including advocating for legislation establishing a “New Jersey Reparations Task Force.” In addition, the League’s executive director sat on the New Jersey Reparations Council convened by the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice. After passage of the position, the League of Women Voters of New Jersey joined the “Say the Word” coalition aimed at advancing reparations in New Jersey.
