School Start Time Study Report: Too Sleepy to Learn?

The Wilton LWV began a
local study of school start times following an October 2001 presentation by CT
Senate President Kevin B. Sullivan who reviewed recent adolescent sleep
research and its implications for student learning, health, and safety.
Per member consensus, Wilton LWV recommended
that the Wilton Board of Ed delay the school start time at Wilton HS and middle
school. After major community outreach/advocacy,a new schedule was implemented
by BOE Sept 2003. Position adopted by LWVCT 2006. Our League's
successful advocacy on behalf of our adolescents earned our community the 2005
Healthy Sleep Community of the Year Award by the National Sleep Foundation, a
feature appearance on NBC Today, an appearance in a Korean public television
video, and recognition by the CT State Senate at CT's Capitol. Since completing
our study, Wilton LWV has assisted many communities in CT and other states.
