At University Hills Elementary School library our goal is to support the learning that is going on in the classroom and to encourage the love of reading in order to create life-long learners. Everyone is welcome to enjoy our collection. We have a wide variety of books at varied levels. Parents are highly encouraged to sign up to borrow books to read at home with their children.

Students in JUMP and K/1 visit the library once a week. During this time they have a short lesson and also check out a book to read. Students in 2nd- 5th visit the library twice a week. Once for a 30 minute class time and the second time for a 15 minute checkout time with their teacher. During class time we will learn library skills, read books/magazines, watching educational videos, and have fun!

Some of the skills and areas included will be:

  • Functions of the library

  • Proper book care

  • Organization of the library

  • Online Public Access Catalog

  • Award winning literature

  • Storytelling

  • Dewey Decimal System

Scholastic Book Fairs are a great opportunity for students and parents to find books they enjoy at a great price. Typically our school library generates $3000 - $5000 per year in profit. With tightening budgets, this allows us to keep new titles accessible to our students. Our fairs are usually held three times a year, once in the fall and twice in the spring. The last fair in May is a Buy One, Get One Free Fair. This is a great time to stock up for your kid’s summer reading.
