January 2016 All-State Choir

All State Choir Was a Hit!!

5th graders Ksenia Sevostianov and Katy Mayers and 4th grader Jade Barrio participated in the 20th annual 2016 New Mexico All State Choral Festival held in Las Cruces at the Las Cruces Convention Center. The students had been working on a repertoire of songs sung in Spanish, Swahili, and English. Their hard work and dedication really paid off! The students worked two days with an internationally known guest clinician, Dr. Janet Galvan -Choral Director of Ithaca College in preparation for a performance that occurred Saturday January 30 at the Las Cruces Convention Center.

Here are some of the highlights of the festival.

Having fun with music at home:

Welcome to the Hillrise Elementary Music Program!

Welcome to Hillrise Elementary and to a music curriculum that will have your child singing, dancing, trying out musical instruments, and keeping time with the beat. We are fortunate to include music as a planned part of our day. Research clearly shows how beneficial music is in expanding brain power while creating an upbeat learning environment.

Music is a natural way to increase learning opportunities in all other academic areas. For your child, understanding rhythm lays the foundation for processing key beginning math concepts. Singing rhyming and alliterative lyric leads to phonemic awareness. Hearing music from around the world opens the door to multicultural awareness and interest in social studies.

During the school year we will be having various grade level performances that your child will be working on.  We look forward to your support and attendance.   These performances are usually held in the school cafeteria.   Look for more information coming home!

Sincerely,

Miranda Ludeman

Musical Sharing Day Calendar

Musical Sharing Day is an opportunity for second through fifth grade students to share   musical interests. Students may bring something musical from home (a CD, a DVD, an IPOD, an instrument, a guest, etc.) to share with the class; if bringing the preceding, parents should check for appropriateness (i.e., no bad language or inappropriate subjects).  One student brought in a DJ once and some students have brought in people who play instruments. Students can also perform in small ensembles or solo. They can sing, play classroom instruments, perform rhythmic chants, dance, or share musical experiences. Musical Sharing Day provides an opportunity to perform/share in front of a small audience (their class) and teaches them appropriate audience behavior. The idea for this special day was created by a fifth grade student in 2007. Throughout the years, this experience has been enjoyed by almost all and is a great way to learn about responsibility and music in a different way relative to the students’ interests, experiences, and culture.

  * Please note that the dates may change because of potential events at the school.

* Some grades will not have Musical Sharing day because of preparation for programs.
