Welcome Back!

August 13, 2018

Hello Doña Ana Families!

Welcome Back!  We are excited to begin the new school year. Our staff has been very busy preparing the building and classrooms, learning new strategies and ways to differentiate instruction during our professional training days, and planning engaging hands-on lessons based on Common Core State Standards! I hope everyone has had an enjoyable summer. This is a time for new beginnings in the world of education and for all of us at Doña Ana Elementary School. There is something special about the opening of a new school year.

Our students, new or returning, come to us a year older, a year wiser and represent all that is good with the world. The proverbial slate is wiped clean, providing learners the prime opportunity to refocus, renew and reinvent their journey to adulthood.

We want all children at Doña Ana Elementary to learn because they can. We want every child to be successful because we know that he or she wants to be. We want all children to be prepared for the next grade level because we know they must be.

Doña Ana’s curriculum is driven by the Common Core State Standards and provides stepping-stones for a lifetime of learning and challenges. As evident in our data our teachers are dedicated to deliver a rigorous, balanced, innovative, differentiated and research based curriculum to ensure that all students become proficient and show academic growth throughout the year.

As we walk the hallways of Doña Ana Elementary, we continue to be impressed with the high level of teaching and learning that occurs here. Teachers and support staff are meeting the needs of our students and extending their learning. Students have the opportunity on a daily basis to engage in meaningful, rich discussions with their classmates around what they’re learning. Whether they’re discussing what materials a magnet attracts, to a shape’s attributes, to meaningful dialogue in reading and writing, students are engaged with the curriculum and each other.

We are striving to increase our NMPED Report Card Grade to an A and need your help. Please ensure that your child is here everyday and on time.  Student attendance is a big part of our school rating. Your child’s teacher will be in close contact with you regarding homework, curriculum, testing data from last year and from the beginning of this year.  Using that data, our goal is to determine how to differentiate instruction to help your child become academically successful.  We invite you to be our partners in this.  All the research shows that when parents and teachers work together, the students win. Please attend Open House and other school events, volunteer if you have the time, and read to and with your child every single day.  Together we can make sure your child succeeds.

Our teaching, administrative, and support staff are excited about and look forward to working with you and your child during the 2016-2017 school year!
