LET'S CELEBRATE

Back to school week! We are off to a great start!

Central Elementary is Growing Leaders by following the 7 Habits of Happy Children

Habit 1 — Be Proactive

You're in Charge

I am a responsible person. I take initiative. I choose my actions, attitudes, and moods. I do not blame others for my wrong actions. I do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking.

Habit 2 — Begin with the End in Mind

Have a Plan

I plan ahead and set goals. I do things that have meaning and make a difference. I am an important part of my classroom and contribute to my school’s mission and vision. I look for ways to be a good citizen.

Habit 3 — Put First Things First

Work First, Then Play

I spend my time on things that are most important. This means I say no to things I know I should not do. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan. I am disciplined and organized.

Habit 4 — Think Win-Win

Everyone Can Win

I balance courage for getting what I want with consideration for what others want. I make deposits in others’ Emotional Bank Accounts. When conflicts arise, I look for third alternatives.

Habit 5 — Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood

Listen Before You Talk

I listen to other people’s ideas and feelings. I try to see things from their viewpoints. I listen to others without interrupting. I am confident in voicing my ideas. I look people in the eyes when talking.

Habit 6 — Synergize

Together Is Better

I value other people’s strengths and learn from them. I get along well with others, even people who are different than me. I work well in groups. I seek out other people’s ideas to solve problems because I know that by teaming with others we can create better solutions than anyone of us can alone. I am humble.

Habit 7 — Sharpen The Saw

Balance Feels Best

I take care of my body by eating right, exercising and getting sleep. I spend time with family and friends. I learn in lots of ways and lots of places, not just at school. I find meaningful ways to help others.

Help shape the leader in your child!

PARENTS!

1 .PARENT/CONFERENCE CENTER: That's right! We now have a new Parent/Conference Center at Central...turn right as you come in the building and you will see the sign, "Parent Center." We have our own board outside the room on which to put announcements, sales, searches, ...whatever we want! We have a computer in the Parent Room for our use! It is open for us at any time the school is open and the Parent/Conference Room is not occupied.

2. LEAD Parents: If you are a parent wondering how you can be more involved with your child and their school...here's an opportunity!

Become a LEAD Parent! There's nothing saying exactly what you have to do but signing up to be a LEAD Parent lets your child's teacher and the school know that you are interested in helping.

3. If you are interested in helping with fund raising, please let the school know.

4. Parents: A LEAD Parent has prepared a box and sheet on which you may communicate any cares or concerns to our principals. It’s in the office.

5. CENTRAL PARENT LIBRARY ZONE: Have you seen it? It's outside the school as you enter from the parking lot. This is a place to trade books so we always have something new to read!

Central Bookmobile

The Central Bookmobile has come! Students may bring books from home and trade for a new book to read. We have a packed cart of donated books so Central students can always have a new book to read.

What’s a Bully…. And who is one?

A Bully is someone who takes advantage of someone else. The goal is to achieve control over the victim. Sometimes a bully even wants to control a whole group of people. A child may become a bully to cover his or her weaknesses. Bullying also can be the result of having poor role models. If a kid’s parents bully him or her—or each other – the child thinks such behavior is normal.

Bullying occurs at all ages, from the littlest kid who kicks you because he wants a toy, to the spouse who belittles you because you can’t cook well or fix a leaky roof, to the boss who threatens to withhold a promotion unless you work next weekend! If we think about it, most of us have experienced some kind of bullying.

A bully may be male or female. Boys are more likely to bully physically and girls more likely to bully verbally by teasing or spreading rumors. Bullies find their victims among kids who are loners, considered “different,” have few friends or unfortunately are alone in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Please Remember,

Central is a No Bully Zone

Dear Parents,

The School day starts at 7:55 A.M. Please have your child here on time. The school day ends at 2:30 P.M. Please pick up your child on time.

Please check our calendar and newsletter for upcoming events.

One item I want to inform you about is that the drop-off/pick-up zone which is designated for that purpose. We ask that you use the front doors to come into the building. We keep the north door locked for safety purposes. If you walk students to school, please use the crossing lights on Alameda or Water Street. We need to ensure everyone is safe as traffic is hectic before and after school. Please know that we have designated handicap areas: 1 on the North end of the school, 2 in front of the school and there are 8 spaces on the El Paso Electric parking lot.

We want to optimize the time of instruction, so we ask that you make any doctor’s appointments before/after school. Every time your son or daughter is absent, or tardy they miss out on instruction. Our first bell rings at 7:55 a.m. and the Tardy bell rings at 8:00 a.m. Just communicate with them. Our goal is to have students present and on time every day!

I do have an open door policy and strive to build on the connection needed between the school and home. Having said this, please know that you are always welcome to stop by and visit even if it’s just to talk.

Your teachers are available to meet with you by appointment.

TARDIES

Tardies are just as serious as absence’s. It is your child’s responsibility to arrive at school prepared and on time every day. Missing the bus is no excuse. Missing the first few minutes of class affects not only your child, but also disrupts her classmates’ learning time.

You can take control of morning chaos. The secret is to establish routines—and stick to them!

**Make bedtime earlier

**Help lay out clothes the night before

**Have backpack ready to go

**Put everything by the door to take to school

**Get your child their own alarm clock

Please make sure your child comes to school ON TIME EVERYDAY and IS HERE EVERYDAY. Please make any appointments with doctors AFTER SCHOOL HOURS. We are following up with attendance meetings, phone calls and contracts if needed. We know that if children are not present, they cannot learn!

________________________________

Remember: Learning builds day by day. A child who misses a day of school also misses a day of learning.

So make school a top priority. By building the habit of daily attendance, you’ll help your child see that school is serious, and chances are you’ll also see an improvement in grades.
