Poster Session and Plenary Workshop on Teaching Philosophy

CALL FOR 500-WORD POSTER ABSTRACTS
ON TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

The Midsouth Philosophy Conference will have a Poster Session on Friday evening.

There will also be a Plenary Workshop on Teaching Philosophy on Saturday afternoon. Those who attend the entire workshop will receive a certificate of completion that they can submit with their annual faculty service reports under "efforts to improve instruction."

There is a $60 registration fee for the conference, $40 for graduate students, payable by cash or check at the conference (but not by credit or debit card).

For most people, the primary (if not sole) contact with philosophy comes in the form of a college or university course on philosophy. A particularly effective course in philosophy can create a life-long love of philosophy. An ineffective or poorly taught initial exposure to philosophy can have the opposite effect, repelling the student from further philosophical thought or study. In a time when philosophical reflection is increasingly important, it behooves all philosophy instructors to seek out ways to improve our teaching effectiveness.

We welcome abstracts for posters from philosophers that share their teaching expertise. We especially welcome abstracts from women and members of minority groups.

Persons submitting abstracts for the Poster Session on Teaching Philosophy are also encouraged to submit separate papers for possible inclusion in the Midsouth Philosophy Conference Program.

Posters on any of the following are particularly welcome:

a unique course in philosophy.

an especially successful course-module in a standard philosophy course.

service learning in philosophy.

engaged learning in philosophy.

inclusive pedagogy in philosophy.

tips/strategies for teaching large philosophy classes (say, classes with 100+ students).

a particularly effective assignment.

teaching materials that are particularly accessible/comprehensible for undergraduates.

strategies for improving graduate teaching.

increasing diversity in philosophy.

effective strategies for increasing the number of philosophy majors.

philosophy for pre-professional majors (pre-law majors, pre-med majors, etc.).

teaching philosophy to incarcerated individuals.
