Reseach Analysis
Purpose:
This assignment offers the opportunity to practice textual analysis in addressing sociologically and/or anthropologically informed questions.
Guidelines / Evaluation
Format
This 4 - 6 page double-spaced essay should be centered around disussion of one or more texts in your research corpus. Reproductions of the texts should appear and be direclty referenced in the analysis. The reproductions should be deisgnated and labeled descriptively as "figures" (for example: Figure 1. Star Wars Movie Poster:) References to the corpus texts in you essay should be cited as: (see Figure 1). Pay close attention to citation and bibliographic formatting, which will be evaluated as part of grading.
Elements
The essay should have the following elements:
• An explicitly articulated main point / argument for which the texts provide valid evidence. That main point / argument should attend to the kinds of relationships with which anthropologists and sociologists are concerned. Situating your argument within the SOAN domain can be accomplished by using SOAN relationship vocabulary and/or framing your analysis as an extension of previoulsy published SOAN research.
•Direct quoation from at least one sociology or anthropology research publication to frame you argument.
•Close analysis of the specific features of the texts that provide supporting evidence for your argument. If your argument hinges on the practical uses or implications of the texts, complementary ethnographic, interview, and historical methods may be important to include.
Presentations
Presentations (five minutes) should be organized around the following slides:
•Direct quotation from SOAN source that inspires / frames your argument
•Reproductions of the corpus text(s) on which your analysis is focused
•Statement of your main poin / argument
Slides should be posted here. Your presentation should draw selectively from your essay to stay within the five minute limit. There will opporuntines for questions following each presentation. You can sign up for presentations here.
