Time domain studies have become one of the areas of strong growth in x-ray research with the advent of new, ultrafast x-ray sources, fast detectors, and laser pump, x-ray probe techniques. This workshop will focus on the application of ultrafast x-ray techniques in the area of the solid state dynamics, of lattice, electrons, and spins. Time-domain studies shed light on the interaction between different degrees of freedom of the system and on relaxation processes returning the system into equilibrium after the excitation. X-ray spectroscopy, diffraction, and imaging are sensitive to magnetic order, electronic state, and lattice structure with p-sec to f-sec time resolution and sub-micron spatial resolution. This workshop will highlight current studies performed using x-rays and will explore future directions of the field.
