As the Biosciences Area Operations Deputy, Helen Cademartori is responsible for managing all aspects of operations and finance. She has handled multi-million dollar projects and transitions in varied environments, both private and public sector, and possesses in-depth expertise managing complex financial, human resource, workforce planning, facilities, and administrative issues.. She has over 20 years experience, including 8 years with Berkeley Lab. Prior to her tenure at the Lab, she was the Director of Finance and Operations for the Tang Center at University of California, Berkeley, and Controller for Premier Staffing. She earned her executive MBA in 2014 at Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley, where she was a Dean’s Fellow.

1. What inspires you to work in STEM?

This is an incredible time to be working in STEM with the tremendous advancements in technology creating opportunities for historic discoveries in virtually every field. Working in STEM inspires me because it is challenging and intellectually stimulating.

2. What excites you about your work at the Energy Department/Berkeley Lab?

The people at Berkeley Lab are amazing. Their dedication, creativity, and brilliance are a continual source of inspiration.

3. How can our country engage more women, girls, and other underrepresented groups in STEM?

Outreach, particularly at the K-12 level is a great place to start. Getting elementary school students, of both genders, more hands-on experience with science and technology should be a national priority.

4. Do you have tips you would recommend for someone looking to enter your field of work?

Take time to build and maintain relationships with your colleagues. Your professional network becomes increasingly important as you take on roles of increasing responsibility.

5. When you have free time, what are your hobbies?

I love to practice yoga, garden, and spend time with friends and family.
