Helping Out a Family in Need
On Labor Day, our neighbors lost their house to a catastrophic fire which has left them without their home, personal possessions, and their sweet dog, Demi. What wasn't destroyed by the fire was ruined by the water, leaving them with only the clothing on their backs. Our hearts are breaking and many want to help this family rebuild their lives. To that effort, I have set up a drop location at the Shields Township Office, where you can leave basic necessities such as gently used clothing (women’s size L and men’s size L), toiletries, gift cards to Jewel, Target, Home Depot, or local restaurants. Their daughter has a GoFundMe page (https://www.gofundme.com/help-my-family-get-back-on-their-ft), where you can donate, also. Thank you in advance for your generous support; they are grateful for all of the help! Sincerely, Caty Weston

News from the Nurse

The health office has been exceptionally busy this week. A variety of nasty bugs have invaded LBMS.  Here is the list of illnesses I've seen this week:  Two confirmed cases of Strep, bronchitis, many stomachaches, vomiting, fevers, and a few colds with sore throats.

Thanks for keeping students home when they are sick, this helps prevent the spread of illness to other students and staff.

Students must be free from fever and vomiting for 24 hours before returning to school.

Enjoy Pumpkin Fest!

Next week, we'll move into the Life Science unit, which is largely genetics and natural selection.

Language Arts- Mrs. Groth & Mrs.

This week students started to investigate the setting in their books and identify its influence on the characters.  Students considered the mood and atmosphere of the setting and noticed the author’s language and emotions it evoked.  Students are working hard in their reading partnerships and applying these strategies in their reading notebooks.  Most students are on their second book and some are already on their third books.
Algebra 1- Mr. Jakcsy and Mrs. Komac
This week students were introduced to literal equations and reviewed chapter 3. The Team Challenge Assessment will be on Monday 10/30 and the Individual Assessment will be on Tuesday 10/31. Then we'll begin chapter 4 which focuses on solving systems of equations.

HSAATH-
Mr. Jakcsy and Mrs. Komac
This week, we explored the world of fractions built with polynomials (rational expressions). The new task was assigned, and students from each team met during ELO to break the task down, assign portions to each team member, and get clarifying questions answered. The team task is due Mon. Nov. 13th. Next week, students will have Quiz 5 for rational expressions on Tues. Oct. 31st.  We will then start working on synthetic division and rational equations.

Health- Ms. Fink
This week, 8th grade students have begun the drug education unit.  We will be discussing topics such as the dangers of prescription drugs, alcohol, and various classifications of drugs such as stimulants and depressants.  As the week comes to a close, we will be discussing the effects that marijuana has on the teen brain and body.  Have a great weekend.
EspañolSra. Ogren
This week the students have been reviewing the hotel vocabulary. They took an assessment in which they drew described scenes, and they took a short quiz using the vocabulary. We also started new vocabulary about things to do while on vacation. We will continue to be reviewing the vocabulary next week. We will have a vocabulary quiz on all the vocabulary from this unit on Thursday, November 2nd. Our verb of the week is the verb "hacer," (to make or to do). Paragraphs for this verb are due on Friday, November 3rd.

Français-Mme Szostak
This week in French students students continued to practice and use the passé composé in writing and speech. There was a quiz on forming the past tense on Thursday. Next we will begin the presentational project, Quand j'étais jeune... (When I was young..) where students present 5 memories from their childhood to the class. This is an oral presentation with visual support from PowerPoint. Presentations begin next Wednesday.
