News from the Nurse

The health office was very busy this week.  Many students were complaining of nausea, some with vomiting.  Many students were complaining about headaches; about half of those students felt better after being given a snack and water.  I am legally prohibited from administering Tylenol or ibuprofen to a student unless I receive a medication authorization form signed by both a parent and healthcare provider.  Please complete the form (found on our website) if you would like your student to take medication at school.

Finally, about six students were absent this week with "Influenza like Illness", there were no confirmed reports of Influenza.

This week in Language Arts, students began reading their book club books. This first book club book needs to be completely read by 3/16. Please encourage your student to read at home! This unit, we will focus on writing about reading. Students will be asked to grow their understanding of literature through daily journaling and conferences.

Math 2 - Tschanz and Carney

This week in Math 2, students completed Chapter 6 which focused on equations and inequalities.  Chapter 7 will begin next week which has students solving complex problems with proportions and percents.

Advanced Math 2 - Tschanz

This week in class, students continued to work with equations of lines and made various scatterplots to look for patterns and trends.  Next week, students will spend time working on slope of lines.

Algebra - Jakcsy

This week students finished chapter 8 and completed the team and individual assessments. Next week we’ll begin chapter 9, which focuses on solving quadratic equations with the quadratic formula and solving inequalities.

HSAATH- Mr. Jakcsy and Mrs. Komac

This week, we got our first introduction to exponentials & logarithms. We start next week with Quiz 15, then begin exploring the properties of logarithms and how they can be useful in solving equations with exponentials and logs. Quiz 16 will be March 21st.

Science - DeYoung

This week the students began to investigate air pressure and its connection to weather. Next week we will examine weather maps.

Social Studies - Twohig

This week students gave loans to people in Africa who want to start small businesses.  They used a site called Kiva.org, and were able to give over 17 loans to help people help themselves.  They then began a mini-unit on immigration. They will be participating in a program called “Penpals”, and will be paired up with another student from a different nation to discuss immigration.

Spanish - Horner

This week in Spanish students practiced giving commands! Commands are how we give directions to a place or give directions to do something. We practiced listening to directions through Simon Says, adding new tasks to the game each day. We then practiced understanding specific directions to a place, using Google Maps to help us locate places around Lake Bluff. Next week students will create a video in which they give a tour of the school using these directions!

French - Szostak

This week in French, students continued to practice all -IR verbs. After mastering the conjugations of verbs like DORMIR, the students are using both groups of -IR verbs to communicate. Students have been asked to correctly use both types of verbs in their communication. Next week, students will begin a summative presentation by talking about school schedules...what would be the ideal schedule or what would be the worst schedule?

Health - Fink

This week health students have been finishing up the trimester by reviewing the male and female reproductive systems and reviewing the content from the 12-week trimester.  On Monday, March 12, health students will report back to PE for the final 12-weeks of school. Have a great weekend.

Art - Mrs. Engel-Julian

This week in art, students are starting to wrap up the trimester by writing their artist statement and preparing their work for display.

Theatre Arts-Olmstead

For the end of the trimester, the students competed in a “Project Runway” style costume competition using garbage bags and duct tape!  There was plenty of creativity and problem solving going on in the drama room. It’s been a great trimester of Theatre Arts!
