Odyssey of the Mind World Competition
On May 20-23, eight LBMS students will be competing at the Odyssey of the Mind Word Competition at Michigan State University. Odyssey of the Mind is an international organization that was founded over 25 years ago based on the principle of creative problem solving. In order to compete, teams of students select a problem and must create and present their solution through a creative performance. No adult input is allowed in the design process. The students are responsible for all ideas and all construction of props and devices. The two teams representing LBMS placed 1st and 2nd in the State of Illinois competition and will now represent our state at the World Competition.

Math 8 - Mrs. Tschanz & Mr. Jakcsy
This week, students worked on using formulas to solve problems involving surface area of three dimensional figures. Then, we started to work on finding volumes of those figures. Next week, students will be working on a project to apply what they have learned throughout this unit.

Algebra - Mrs. Tschanz
This week, students reviewed solving quadratic equations by factoring and learned to solve using the completing the square method. Next week, they will learn the quadratic formula and will apply and use it to solve various types of problems.

Language Arts- Mrs. Springer
Students are very close to completing their children's books! They have worked diligently to produce lovely, unique stories with moral lessons. We will share our work with the LBES second graders on May 28th. Next week, we will begin a unit on short stories by classic authors. We will focus on the structure and characteristics of the short story as well as theme.

Language Arts- Mrs. McNicholas
Students turned in their children's books on Monday! The final results were fabulous! Look for permission slips that give students guardian permission to walk to the elementary school on May 28th to read their books to the 2nd graders. We have now moved on to our short story unit. Students read "The Lady, or the Tiger?", "To Build a Fire", "The Necklace", and "The Veldt" that exposed them to some classic authors: Stockton, London, de Maupassant, and Bradbury. Throughout this unit we are focusing on theme and how identifying problems/issues lead readers to discover theme.

Social Studies- Mrs. Twohig
Students did a great job this week looking at the physical features and the countries of Oceania and Antarctica. They will be looking at native and exotic species in this region and attempting to answer the question: How does a country's location shape life within its borders?

Science- Mr. DeYoung
This week the students finished our exploration of photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and fermentation. We then began learning about how things can enter and leave the cell. Next week we will wrap up active and passive transport and begin the heredity portion of our cells and heredity unit.

Español - Srta. Horner
Students have started our newest unit "¿Te puedo ayudar?" We are using some familiar grammatical structures while we talk to each other, and we're also acting out new vocabulary! We will continue with learning how to tell others to do their chores!

Français - Mme Szostak
This week in French students continued to practice showing possession with adjectives like my, your, our, and their. We use them in context when talking about our families. Next week, students will begin their adjective unit!

Theatre Arts- Mrs. Olmstead
This week the students are screening their final "Door Scene" projects and beginning to work with the GoPro cameras. The students will be filming our Bluffer Field Day next week using a variety of accessories and compiling and editing the film for the rest of the school to view!

Health - Ms. Fink
This week in health, students have been going through the Life Skills Training. We have been reviewing skills such as how to cope with anxiety and how to improve social skills. As we complete the unit, we will discuss ways to be assertive without being mean and how to resist peer pressure. Have a great weekend.
