Career Day is Coming!

Our 2nd annual Career Exposition Day is coming on January 25th. We are looking for people willing to give about 2.5 hours of your time to share what you do for a living with interested students. Each presenter is asked to prepare a 20-25 minute session for middle school students. This session may be repeated 1-3 times that morning. Based on the interest of our students, here are the larger career categories that we are seeking. We are definitely not limited to these career categories if you wish to present! Please contact Mrs. Komac at hkomac@lb65.org if you are willing to be a presenter.

Course Updates
Social Studies- Mrs. Johnson
Students composed and submitted essays this week based on their individual preference to assume citizenship in either Ancient Greece or Ancient Rome. As they addressed the attributes of their chosen civilization, they incorporated aspects of the following standards:

SS.G.2.6-8.Md.C: Compare and contrast the cultural and environmental characteristics of different places or regions

SS.H.2.6-8.Md.C: Analyze multiple factors that influenced the perspectives of people during different historical eras

SS.H.4.6-8.LC: Explain multiple causes and effects of historical events

Students were challenged to include as much Social Studies specific vocabulary as possible in their essays. Students also researched legendary figures in Greek history and connected their accomplishments to influences in our modern society today, deepening understanding of how the past continues to influence the present. When we return from break, we will begin to invesitigate Ancient Egypt!!!

Science- Mrs. Panjwani
n Science, we took the quiz on lessons 1 - 5 on Monday.  It was returned and discussed on Wednesday.  Results were good.  I think everyone has a good grasp of the topics covered.  We also introduced the concept of diffusion of gas and had a lab on detectors using litmus paper to detect differences in both liquids and gases.  The focus was to understand that there is a difference between particles of gas from different sources - building up to the idea of atoms and unique elements.  Ms. Arwady will be here starting January 3 until Mrs. Panjwani returns.

Language Arts
Mrs. Dunn and Mrs. Hominick
This week the students completed their Literary Essays about Character.  They also participated in the classroom round of the Spelling Bee.  Thirdly they completed their Literary Language Test on Wednesday.  Hopefully your child tells you about the Winter Break Reading Challenge!  Please remind them to read, read, read this break!!!

Advanced Math 1- Mrs. Carney and Mrs. Bishop
This week students completed working on Unit 5: Fractions and Area. Students took their Chapter 5 Test and will begin Chapter 6: Dividing and Building expressions after break.  I hope you have a great break!

Math 1
This week students worked with finding parts of parts using fractions and began to look at how to represent parts of parts using decimals.  After break, students will be working with finding the areas of certain polygons.  Have a wonderful break!

Algebra- Mr. Jakcsy
This week students began chapter 6, which focuses on modeling two-variable data sets. Students will investigate patterns within data, develop trend lines, write equations that model data, and analyze data for potential correlations. We’ll continue chapter 6 when classes resume after break.
Español- Srta. Horner
This week in Spanish, students began their writing assignment for Unit 2. Students were asked to write a short paragraph about things that make them unique - their personalities, their homes or families, or other things they want to share! Then, they designed a self-portrait that incorporated those unique things from their writing to display alongside their paragraphs. Students shared a lot of interesting facts and very creative self portraits! Enjoy the break!

Français- Mme Szostak
This week in French, students have been traveling to Paris! Each student is researching a famous Parisian monument and will present their findings to the class. Students were introduced to 11 different monuments via my power point and learned basic info about each. They then researched the monument of their choice. We also visited Paris via Google Earth. Students will have a working understanding of where these monuments are located in Paris and the basic set up of Paris with its Right and Left Banks, the Seine, and the islands in the middle of the Seine. They are ready to be your tour guides in Paris!

Health- Miss Fink
This week, students have been discussing and role playing various scenarios that affect friendships.  As we continue throughout the week, we have been discussing the characteristics of a healthy and unhealthy friendship and when it is okay to end a friendship that is not healthy.  As the week comes to a close, we are watching "Finding Nemo," and analyzing the relationships/friendships that are taking place.  When we return from break, we will begin the nutrition unit.  Have a great break!

STEAM- Mrs. Olmstead
The students are more than halfway through their first engagement!  After break they will have two more days to work before starting to develop the presentations they will share with the class.  Have a wonderful and relaxing winter break!
