Welcome to English 8

This year we are using Lucy Calkins' Reading/Writing Workshop from the Teacher's College Reading and Writing Project  at Columbia University. This Common Core workshop curriculum alternates between reading and writing units that include brief, explicit instruction in reading and writing skills, guided skill practice within student partnerships, and independent student work time. During student independent work, the teacher circulates through the class to check in with students regarding the specific teaching point of the day's lesson. Teachers are able to confer with individual students every 1-2 weeks.
Unlike a traditional curriculum that focuses on content from a common text, the reading/writing workshop model allows for student selected texts. Daily mini-lessons focus on a teaching point that students are able to identify within their own texts. The workshop model incorporates differentiated learning and student choice in order to develop life-long readers, writers, and thinkers.
