La Nostra Costa author, Ivano Franco Comelli, was born in 1937 in Santa Cruz, California, some 80 miles south of San Francisco. He grew up on its rugged north coast as a member of an Italian immigrant ranching family. After attending the local schools in Santa Cruz, he entered San Jose State College, located in San Jose, California. He graduated in 1959 with a BA degree in Police and subsequently joined the San Jose Police Department. From 1970 to 1989 he lived in Scotts Valley.  It was while he was living in Scotts Valley that he received a devastating call in the middle of the night that would change his life forever.  His best friend San Jose Police Officer Richard Huerta was shot and killed while writing a traffic citation. Comelli served thirty years with that Department, retiring in 1989 with the rank of Captain. He and his wife, Mildred, presently live in Morgan Hill.

After his retirement, the author once again became interested in the history of the north coast of Santa Cruz and of the people who lived and worked there. In 2001, his article entitled, “Wrong side of the Highway”, was published in the much acclaimed book, Una Storia Segreta: The Secret History of Italian American Evacuation and Internment during World War II, published by Heyday Books, Berkeley, California.
