Below you will find updated information regarding scholarships, college fairs, college visits, and other important events. This is the time of year for juniors and seniors to schedule college visits, SAT/ACT tests as well as other college entrance exams and researching colleges. In addition, all students ( 9th - 12th grade) should be applying for scholarships.

Attention Seniors

All seniors need to verify that the Counseling Office has your social security number in our school database. This information is the link between you and the Georgia Student Finance Commission. Your HOPE Scholarship eligibility depends upon it.

Recommendation Requests

If you are a senior and you have requested, or will be requesting that your counselor and/or a teacher provide a recommendation for you, please make certain that you have given them with a copy of your Senior Profile. The Profile is available in the Guidance Office or online at lanierhs.org under the Counseling Office tab.

Information Sessions

The Latin American Association is excited to announce the LAA's College Access Workshop Series on Saturday, December 14th from 1:00-5:00 p.m. Join us for the event as it promises to be filled with inspiration, knowledge and resources for 8th-12th graders and their parents on the college process. The workshop series will take place at the LAA's outreach center at 2750 Buford Highway, Atlanta, GA 30324.

Scholarship Information

Anne Ford Scholarship

The Anne Ford Scholarship is a $10,000 scholarship ($2,500/year over four years) granted to a graduating high school senior with a documented learning disability who will be enrolled in a full-time bachelor's degree program in the fall of 2014.

The ideal Anne Ford Scholar is a student who:

1. Articulates his or her LD and clearly demonstrates the importance of self-advocacy.

2. Is committed to completing a four-year college degree and has begun to set realistic career goals.

3. Participates in school and community activities, has demonstrated academic achievements consistent with college and career goals.

4. Plans to contribute to society in ways that increase opportunities for individuals with LD.

5. Someone who is a role model and spokesperson for others who struggle with LD.

To be eligible for the 2013-2014 Anne Ford Scholarship, an applicant must:


Be a graduating high school senior who will be attending a four-year bachelor's degree program in the fall of 2014, have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher on a 4-point scale (or equivalent),

demonstrate financial need, provide most current documentation of an identified learning disability.

Please Note: Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder alone is not considered to be a learning disability; eligible candidates with ADHD must also provide documentation of a specific learning disability. Be a United States citizen.

The 7th annual create a greeting card $10.000 scholarship contest is under way. The winner will be announced on Friday, March 14, Entering the contest is easy! Entrants must submit a unique photo, piece of artwork, or computer graphic for the front of a greeting card. If you are a senior student who has demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit and initiative, you might be eligible for scholarships valued at between $1,000 and $10,000 dollars. The applicant must be a graduating high school senior who is entering his or her freshman year at an accredited two or four year university, college or vocational institute in the fall of 2014, and who owns/operates an established business. 2014 Istanbul Center & Atlantic Institute Art & Essay Contest
We are very excited to bring the 2014 Art & Essay Contest yet again to students in Georgia! The Istanbul Center, in partnership with Atlantic Institute, is pleased to announce the eighth year of our Art & Essay Contest. Since its origin in 2006, the Art & Essay Contest has grown at an incredible rate. Istanbul Center is pleased to have enriched so many young minds and educators with this project. On average, we receive 2,500 submissions annually from over 200 schools across Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.To apply, your submission must be received no later than December 20,
2013 by 12:00 AM.

Scholarship Essay for Juniors and Seniors

High school juniors and seniors are eligible to participate in FIRE's essay contest. To enter, students must submit an essay between 800 and 1000 word on the provided topic. The winning prize is worth $10,000, second place $5,000 and three $1,000 runner-up prizes. Four $500 winners will be chosen from the remaining entrants in a drawing. Bank of America Student Leaders

The student Leaders' program recognizes those who step outside of the classroom to lead and serve in their own communities and beyond. You can continue to make an impact in your community with Bank of America's support. 2014 Student of Integrity Scholarship: Topic & Instructions

Students must write an essay, not to exceed 500 words, based on the following topic: The importance of the Better Business Bureau in today's marketplace. Students may write the essay in any form they wish. Judging will be based on how well students captured the essence of the topic and their creativity in responding.

JJ Campbell Memorial Scholarship

The JJ Campbell Memorial Scholarship was created to honor Johnathan Joseph Campbell, also known as JJ. JJ was a freshman at Lanier High School when he passed away in a car accident in 2011. He was talented, especially in art and was interested in pursuing a career in the fitness industry. His passion was to help others, no matter what the context.

This scholarship has been created to give a one-time donation of $1,000 to an individual pursuing a career in which they will help other people. While anyone who has a passion to help others should apply, special consideration will be given to individuals pursuing careers in art or fitness.

Applicants are to write an essay no longer than 500 words describing how they hope to help others with the degree they are pursuing. The deadline for this application is March 3, 2014. Applications are in the Guidance office or see Ms. Perez

Kiwanis Club of Lanier Scholarship

Our local Kiwanis will be sponsoring scholarships available to several Lanier High School students.

The criteria for this scholarship are:

3.0 minimum GPA

Demonstrate Leadership

Community Service

Involvement in Extracurricular Activities

Work History (if any)

Please see Ms. Perez to pick up an application. There is an interview involved and you must sign up for an interview time when you turn in your completed application. Deadline is March 3, 2014.
Area II Gwinnett Council PTA Scholarship

Area II is proud to present eight (8) $750.00 scholarships to deserving high school students who have successfully met or exceeded the State of Georgia graduation requirements and plan to attend an accredited two or four year college or university.

Only students in Parent Teacher and Student Associations (PTSA) within Area II are eligible to apply. A student is eligible to apply for the Gwinnett Area II PTA Scholarship if he/she is a PTSA member of an Area II high school, is a graduating senior, is interested in attending an accredited four (4) year or two year (2) college or university, has a satisfactory scholastic record acknowledged by an administrator, counselor, or teacher, and exhibited good character acknowledged by an adult non-family member or mentor.

Applications must be postmarked by Saturday, March 15, 2014.

The Brenden M. Elbaz Scholarship

The Brenden M. Elbaz Scholarship has been established to honor Brenden Elbaz, an aspiring 23 year old who passed away on September 28, 2011. As the son of a teacher at Lanier High School, Brenden served as a motivational speaker for some of our at-risk students by challenging them to complete high school and pursue their goals in life and not let anything deter them. Brenden was a second year student at Gainesville State University pursuing a degree in Pre-Law. This scholarship has been created to award a graduating senior with a one-time scholarship of $500.00.

The criterion for the award is as follows:

A graduating senior who has been accepted to any post-secondary school (trade, technical or college/university)

Essay no longer than 500 words on "Overcoming Obstacles"

Personal Interview

No GPA requirement

Essay must be turned in to Ms. Perez in the Guidance Office no later than March 28, 2014.

Information Sessions

On Monday, November 25, 2013 there will be an information forum for the U.S. Naval Academy. The meeting will be held at the Crawford Media Building, 6 West Druid Hills Road, Atlanta, GA 30329 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Students will get information on the nomination and appointment process and hear from Midshipmen. You can register for this event by sending an email to Tom Sammon at tomsammon@charter.net by November 16th. He will need the student's full name, high school, email address, and the number that will be in attendance. Please enter the Subject Lines as "USNA Event Atlanta".

GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program

Honoring the legacy and character of our nation's 40th President, each year the GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program awards approximately 20 college-bound high school seniors a $10,000 scholarship. This scholarship is renewable for an additional three years - up to $40,000 total per recipient. Awards are for undergraduate study only, and may be used for education-related expenses, including tuition, fees, books, supplies, room, and board. In addition, Scholars are invited to participate in a special awards program. Applications accepted until January 9th, 2014.

2014 NAACP ACT-SO Scholarship Competition

The NAACP's ACT-SO: Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics is a yearlong achievement program designed to recruit, stimulate, and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students.

Sugar Hill 75th Anniversary Time Capsule Essay Competition

The City of Sugar Hill 75th Anniversary Committee is seeking submissions of original essays about "Life in Sugar Hill Today (2014)" and "What I Think Life in Sugar Hill Will Be in 2089". The top 5 winning essays from each category will be placed in the Sugar Hill time capsule which will be buried as part of the City's 2014 75th anniversary celebration. The winning writers will receive a certificate, have their entries read and recognition at the Sugar Hill Time Capsule Ceremony in March. The contest is open to all K-12 students in the North Gwinnett and Lanier Cluster schools (elementary, middle, and high school); and to any Sugar Hill resident that is a student in a K-12 private or home school program. The Submission Deadline is November 29, 2013 at 4pm! Check the City of Sugar Hill web site for the essay rules and an entry form.

2014 Colored Rocks Foundation Competition

The Colored Rocks Foundation is a national 501(c)(3) awarding The Colored Rocks Prize to notable male students of color who set positive examples and make worthy commitments to the success of their peers. Our goal: to improve high school graduation rates among this group. The Prize is awarded annually to 15 senior male high school students from diverse ethnic backgrounds. The Prize recognizes and awards these high achieving students who have committed to help at least one of their struggling peers achieve their high school diploma. Step-by-step, Colored Rocks are reversing the disturbing numbers of male students of color who become high school dropouts in Georgia.
All entries must be submitted at Coloredrocks.org between September 20, 2013 and December 5, 2013 and must be at least 500 but less than 1000 words (one to two pages) combined for the essay answer and community project plan.

Bank of America Atlanta Football Classic

100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc. invites you and your students to the Georgia Dome at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 5th, 2013 for the Atlanta Football Classic. The new battle begins with a match-up between the North Carolina A&T Aggies and the South Carolina State Bulldogs and their dynamic marching bands. Are you an outstanding leader? A dedicated student in and out of the classroom? A college-bound and community-minded individual? If so, we encourage you to apply to Aio Wireless 30 days 30 dreams scholarship in partnership with the Latin American Association.
All candidates must meet ALL of the following eligibility criteria:

*Currently a high school senior
*Open to any ethnic backgrounds
*Have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
*Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited four-year college or university based in the U.S. or Puerto Rico for the entire 2013-14 academic year
*Citizenship is not a requirement
*Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of necessity and merit. All decisions are final.

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund Event

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund is hosting a special event to promote the Gates Millennium Scholarship to Hispanic males. The event will be on Saturday, November 2nd from 8:30 - 2:00 p.m. at Kennesaw State University. The program will help participants understand how to apply to college, learn ways to pay for college and what to expect as college students. 2014 Istanbul Center & Atlantic Institute Art & Essay Contest
We are very excited to bring the 2014 Art & Essay Contest yet again to students in Georgia! The Istanbul Center, in partnership with Atlantic Institute, is pleased to announce the eighth year of our Art & Essay Contest. Since its origin in 2006, the Art & Essay Contest has grown at an incredible rate. Istanbul Center is pleased to have enriched so many young minds and educators with this project. On average, we receive 2,500 submissions annually from over 200 schools across Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.To apply, your submission must be received no later than December 20, 2013 by 12:00 AM. Girl Scout Gold Award

The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. Open only to girls in high school, this prestigious award challenges you to change the world-or at least your corner of it, and become eligible for college scholarships, too. By the time you put the final touches on your seven-step project, you'll have solved a community problem-not only in the short term, but for years into the future. Please pick up information by the scholarship bulletin board in front of the Guidance Office.

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

Do you need MONEY for college. As a community service, the Ladies of Omega Epsilon Zeta Chapter, are offering a workshop to assist all college bound students in understanding the financial aid process. Recommendation Requests

If you are a senior and have requested or will be requesting your counselor or teacher provide a recommendation for you; please make certain that you have given them with a copy of your Senior Profile. The Profile is available in the Guidance Office or online at lanierhs.org under the Counseling Office tab.

Scholarships - Georgia State

The Honors College at Georgia State has close to one million dollars in scholarships to offer students. Students and their parents are invited to attend an information session to hear about their Honors College, visit the interactive classrooms and student community spaces, learn all about the scholarship opportunities and also enjoy a meal at one of the dining halls. Eligible students must have a minimum 1250 SAT (verbal and math combines) or minimum 28 ACT composite and a 3.5 GPA or higher. The dates available are September 27th and October 11th from 8:30 am - 2:30 p.m. Email tourguide@gsu.edu for more information.

Area II Gwinnett Council PTA Scholarship

Area II is proud to present eight (8) $750.00 scholarships to deserving high school students who have successfully met or exceeded the State of Georgia graduation requirements, and plan to attend an accredited two or four year college or university. Only students in Parent Teacher and Student Associations (PTSA) within Area II are eligible to apply. A student is eligible to apply for the Gwinnett Area II PTA Scholarship if he/she is a PTSA member of an Area II high school, is a graduating senior, is interested in attending an accredited four (4) year or two year (2) college or university, has a satisfactory scholastic record acknowledged by an administrator, counselor, or teacher.
