Scipio is in the extreme southwest corner of Reily Township at the Morgan Township and Indiana line. It was first called Philanthropy, which was laid out about 1820 by Joseph Alyea. The original plat was entirely within Franklin County, Indiana. The area was said to have been the site of an Indian village. Scipio was named for Roman generals -- "Scipio the Elder" who defeated Hannibal (202 B. C.), and "Scipio the Younger" who led the final destruction of Carthage (146 B.C.) in the Third Punic War.
