Great Mound of Butler County

Great Mound of Butler County -- of prehistoric origin -- is east of Wayne-Madison Road in Section 19 of Madison Township, north of Trenton. "Upon one of the highest hills in Madison Township stands the largest mound in the county," said archaeologist John P. McLean in his 1879 book, The Moundbuilders of Butler County, Ohio. The mound, built more than 2,000 years ago, was 43 feet high, had a circular base of 511 feet and contained 824,480 cubic feet of soil when measured by McLean, who cataloged more than 150 mounds and 17 enclosures in Butler County. He said "with the exception of Ross County, it contains more ancient earthworks or enclosures than any other county in the state."
