Gano is in Section 20 of West Chester Township on the Butler County-Hamilton County line. It was established as a station on the Short Line Railroad (later the Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati & Indianapolis Railroad; the New York Central; Penn Central; Conrail and Norfolk Southern since June 1, 1999).

Gano was platted May 12, 1873, by Charles Gano -- a promoter of the Short Line -- after the railroad was built. A Gano post office existed from Dec. 19, 1872, until Feb. 28, 1910.
