Contreras is in Oxford Township at the Indiana state line (Union County, Ind.). A post office was there from Nov. 14, 1849, until June 30, 1903. The community was named for the Battle of Contreras during the Mexican War. The Aug. 19-20, 1847, confrontation -- southwest of Mexico City -- was won by an American army commanded by Gen. Winfield Scott. (See Union County, Indiana)
