Camp Cambell Gard, the Hamilton YMCA camp, is between Augspurger Road and the Great Miami River in St. Clair Township Mr. and Mrs. Homer Gard announced in January 1926 their gift of a 30-acre site, about six miles north of Hamilton, to be used as a camp for young people. It was a memorial to their son, Charles Campbell Gard, who had died Oct. 25, 1921, at the age of 26. The World War I veteran of the artillery and air service was managing editor and vice president of the Hamilton Journal when he died. His father, Homer, was president and publisher of the newspaper. In donating the camp, the Gards asked "that it always be available for boys and girls of any age, color or religion." Camp Campbell Gard was dedicated July 1, 1927.
