Alert is a community in Section 28 of Morgan Township, near the west section line at Howard's Creek. A schoolhouse was built there about 1817 or 1820. William Bebb, a future governor of Ohio, built a brick residence there in 1830. There was an Alert post office from July 16, 1850, until Oct. 15, 1904. John Iseminger, who was an auctioneer and operated a general store, was the first postmaster and served for more than 30 years.
"It is claimed that the local people were very 'alert' to the issues of the day," according to A Self-Guided Driving Tour of Historic Morgan Township. (For more information on Gov. Bebb, see the entry for Gov. Bebb Preserve.)
