About Mrs. Garvey

Music educator and trumpeter, Erin K. Garvey is the Director of Bands at John Page Middle School in Madison Heights, Michigan.  She began her teaching appointment in 2007, which currently includes Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Grade Concert Bands, the Page Jazz Band, and co-directing the Fifth Grade Concert Band with Michael Garvey. Prior to her assignment at Page she was the Assistant Director of Bands at Algonac Public Schools in Algonac, Michigan from 2005-2007.  Mrs. Garvey graduated as the Outstanding Senior in the College of Arts and Letters with high honors from Michigan State University after completing her student teaching in Charlotte, Michigan. She earned her Master’s in Music Education from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 2014.

As a trumpeter, Mrs. Garvey has performed as a soloist with the Five Lakes Silver Band, Motor City Brass Band, Capital City Brass Band, as well as local high school bands, orchestras, community bands and jazz bands. She is currently a member of the solo cornet section or the award winning Five Lakes Silver Band. At a national level, she has been recognized, receiving fifth place in the collegiate ensemble division at the 2004 National Trumpet Competition at George Mason University. She studied trumpet with retired Toledo-area band director Tom Watson, Michigan State Trumpet Professor Rich Illman, and Woodrow English, principal trumpet (ret.) U.S. Army Band.

Professionally, Mrs. Garvey is a member of the American School Band Directors Association, the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association, and the North American Brass Band Association. She attends the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago on a yearly basis and has also attended the ASBDA National Conference (Louisville, KY), North American Music Merchant Music Educator Days (Anaheim, CA), and the Michigan Music Conference (Grand Rapids, MI). In 2008, as a young educator, she was recognized by the ASBDA with an award for "Outstanding Potential."

Mrs. Garvey lives in Royal Oak, MI with her husband Michael, the Lamphere High School Band Director. She has one dog named Olive and a cat named Kitty. She enjoys cooking, baking, and exploring the wide variety of world cuisine that metro Detroit has to offer. Her favorites list on Netflix includes Chef's Table, and The Great British Baking ShowHer life goals include always owning tickets to a performance of Hamilton and always having her next vacation planned.
