Experience the World, Share your Life – Host a LILA Language Ambassador

posted Apr 22, 2014, 1:28 PM by Mandy Eilers

Greetings, LILA families,

This year LILA needs ~30 families to host our Language Ambassadors for the 2014-2015 school year.  Hosting provides an opportunity for your family to learn about new cultures and to share your own.

Hosting is a good way for your family to support LILA and helps us create a truly international school that benefits all students. The hosting experience will allow your family to develop a meaningful relationship with someone from another culture and creates memories that will last a lifetime!

Who are Language Ambassadors?

  • They bring their own languages and cultures to life by engaging and motivating students, leaving them with new confidence in their ability to communicate across borders.
  • They are considered teaching assistants and help maintain a low student to teacher ratio at LILA.
  • They are single, native Spanish or Chinese speaking adults between the ages of 20 and 30.
  • As native speaker models, they also allow students to hear fluent conversation between two highly proficient speakers, rather than always student-teacher level of conversation.
What are host family responsibilities?
  • They come in all shapes and sizes and serve as a Language Ambassador’s substitute family for half the school year.
  • They provide room and board (a private bedroom, shared bathroom and
  • meals). Host families are not expected to cover any other expenses (Ambassadors bring their own spending money).
  • They do their best to provide care, moral support and basic needs to a Language Ambassador as if he or she were a member of the family.
  • When possible, they provide transportation to and from LILA (but other arrangements can be made).

How do I learn more about hosting?  Email us at hostfamilies@lakesinternational.org.
