Attendance Policy

King Kamehameha III Attendance Policy

School attendance is mandatory in the state of Hawaii, and regular attendance is expected of all King Kamehameha III students.  We know when students miss too much school – regardless of the reason—it can cause them to fall behind academically. Please make every effort to help your child attend school daily and arrive to school on time.  Every Day Counts!

School hours are as follows:

7:45 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. -- Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday

7:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. – Wednesday

The school campus opens at 7:00 a.m., and students are dismissed from the playground areas to their classrooms at 7:45 a.m.  Students are considered tardy as of 7:50 a.m., but may still report directly to class until 8:00 a.m.  Students arriving to school after 8:00 a.m. must report to the school office for a tardy slip before going to class.  Students are considered PRESENT if they are in school for at least half of the school day.  Conversely, students are considered ABSENT if they are in school for less than one half of the day.  Each quarter, the school will report to parents the total number of days absent from school as well as the number of days tardy to school.  This information is provided on the quarterly report cards.

We realize some absences/tardies are unavoidable due to health problems or other extenuating circumstances.  Consideration will be given to absences due to illness with a verifiable note by the doctor/dentist, subpoenas to appear in court, observance of a religious holiday, or death of a family member.  Absences for other reasons such as family trips/vacations, helping parents work, and/or babysitting younger siblings are discouraged.  In addition, we discourage the scheduling of medical or dental appointments during the school day.

In an effort to improve attendance, parents of students who’ve missed 10 or more days may be required to attend a school-level parent support session with our school social worker and vice principal.  When the supports provided through the school do not result in improvement, parents may be required to attend a Maui Police Department parent class or be referred to Family Court to assist parents/students in complying with Hawaii’s mandatory school attendance statutes.
