  • Reading Workshop comes to a close
The students have been diligently reading their challenged/banned books and discussing other issues of censorship in class. They are making connections between many current events regarding protection under the First Amendment and have tied much of their learning to their social studies lessons as well.

It is so amazing to hear their conversations and see them really wrestle with issues of censorship and age-appropriateness as it pertains to them and content they come into contact with.

The novels need to finished by beginning of class Friday February 3rd!!

The students will then begin writing a traditional five paragraph argument essay on topics surrounding their novel, character, conflicts, and theme.

  • Censorship Unit Begins!!!
Students are beginning a new 6 wk unit that includes reading a novel and creating a well-written, informed persuasive paper. The students will begin the unit by discussing what censorship is and what it isn't. They will explore things people censor and reasons people censor. They will gather information on their own and in a presentation by our school librarian. They will become aware of the freedoms promised by the government and the age-appropriate restrictions that bind them. This unit provides students with a forum to express critical thoughts and to see how they are affected by the issues and decisions surrounding censorship. This unit ties in with the Bill of Rights unit they will be working on in social studies!
