LACOS CE Seminar on 7/10

Veterans Stand Down health fair on 12/19-12/20

Two optometrists, Dr. Jonovan Ottenbacher and Dr. Gary Asano, and eight optometry students, Alice Wong, Deborah Duan, Phoenix Tran, Piper Bahr, Amy Nguyen, Bryan Kimura, Mina Baek, and Yen Sou, volunteered their time to give nearly 150 veterans eye exams and glasses prescriptions at the Stand Down health fair on Saturday and Sunday. Winter CE Seminar and COA Town Hall Meeting (updated 12/08/15)

Volunteer in Honduras in February

Jeffrey Wasson, MD, a pediatrician in private practice in Santa Monica, has been the medical director of a medical mission to Honduras for the past 18 years. They go to Honduras for 1 week in late February and visit 4 communities, mostly rural. They bring antibiotics, antiparacitics, vitamins, etc and see about 1200 patients during the week.  They have on occasion brought an optometrist with them to dispense appropriate glasses for those people in need. This has always been a very popular component of their mission and would like to again have an optometrist and possibly an optometry student on their team.  If you are interested, please contact Dr. Wasson at jwasson24@gmail.com

LACOS doctors attend Leg Day Sacramento (updated 5/21/14)
Over 100 California optometrists including 9 LACOS members attended Legislative Day in Sacramento recently to talk to legislators about Senate Bill 492, which aims to relieve some of the primary care physician shortage caused by the Affordable Care Act.  Making the trip were Amrita Dhillon, Rick Hoffman, Candi Kimura, Jay Messinger, Ellis Miles, Marty Prince, Elliot Vaupen, Jonovan Ottenbacher, and Barry Weissman.

The trip is partly financed by All Saints Church in Beverly Hills. In the past, the optometrists have brought used glasses to dispense to the patients in need. Our Spring Seminar on Sunday, June 9th featured 5 hours of TPA-certified CE on a variety of topics with a large discount for LACOS and COA members. Optometrist volunteers needed (updated 3/31/13)
The upcoming RAM/California (Remote Area Medical) vision clinic will be held at the Riverside County Fairgrounds in Indio, CA on April 4-7, 6:30am-6pm, coinciding with OptoWest, held 10 minutes away. Projectors, phoropters, and slit lamps are provided. Please bring your ophthalmoscope and desire to help those in need. Lunch will be provided. Free eyeglasses will be made on site by a portable RAM optical lab. Register online  or simply show up.

Feria de Salud on Sunday, 11/11/12 from 10am-3pm at Olvera Street (updated 11/16/12)
Once again LACOS doctors and students from SCCO, Western, and UCLA volunteered at the Feria de Salud health fair sponsored by the American Diabetes Association.  Vision and ocular health screenings were performed, and patients in need of full exams were given referrals.  Read more >>
 
 


COA Town Hall Meeting
COA will be holding a Town Hall Meeting on Sept 27, 2012 from 7pm-9pm at the Olympic Collection (11301 Olympic Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90064).  Doctors from LACOS, SBOS, and SFVOS are invited to discuss items they see as priorities for the future of optometry.
