This year, Earth Overshoot Day – the day when humanity’s use of natural resources exceeds the planet’s ability to regenerate these resources – fell on 13 August. In less than eight months, human beings have used up the Earth’s natural “budget” for the entire year. The situation is not improving: Earth Overshoot Day has steadily moved back – falling in early October in 2000 to mid-August this year.

The costs of our “ecological overspending” are becoming more evident by the day – deforestation, drought, fresh water scarcity, soil erosion, biodiversity loss and the build-up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. As a major consumer of global natural resources, Hong Kong must begin to contain and reduce our consumption of these resources.
