The Course

The analysis and identification of unknown organic compounds constitutes a very important aspect of organic chemistry. This can be achieved by either organic qualitative methods or modern techniques. Modern organic identification techniques are based on spectroscopy.  It can provide structural information for all phases of matter, and for mixtures as well as for pure compounds. This course includes four different forms of spectroscopy which are most useful for organic chemists to identify unknown organic compounds: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Infrared (IR), and Mass (MS), and Ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy. Each provides its own special kind of data that apply to molecular structure. MS provides accurate molecular weights, NMR allowing for the determination of different protons and carbons in different chemical environments; IR confirms the presence or abscent of certain functional groups. A UV spectrum is helpful in identifying unsaturation or the presence of heteroatoms having non-bonding electrons.

In practical organic identification course in which simple organic qualtitaive methods and spectroscopic identification of organic compounds are combined together to identify unknown organic compounds. Nowadays, spectroscopic methods are the mostly used for identification of organic compounds. However, much laboratory skills gained from using simple qualitative tests to determine the identity of unknown compounds. Structures of unknown compounds can be determined by comparing physical properties, performing functional group tests, and checking melting points of derivatives against those of known compounds reported in the literature. Solubility properties and chemical reactivity become apparent during these qualtitaive tests.

Entry level skills: The student must be able to read and understand the topics in English. In addition of that, the student must have good knowledge in Organic Chemistry (structure and properties). For the practical session you must be familiar with techniques for weighing, measuring by volume, observing colour channges, and mixing in a test tube, as well as analysis of 1H NMR, 13C NMR and IR spectra.
