Department of Manufacturing Engineering (DMFE)
Description:
The Manufacturing Engineering Department at Faculty of Engineering was established in the end of 2013. In all Iraqi universities, manufacturing engineering is the unique engineering department.
The department of Manufacturing Engineering is regarded as the sole department of its type in Kurdistan Region in particular and in Iraq in general. My colleagues and I are trying very hard to raise the standard of teaching at this department to be compatible with high ranking universities.

Manufacturing engineers develop and create physical artifacts, production processes, and technology. It is a very broad area which includes the design and development of products. The manufacturing engineering discipline has very strong overlaps with  mechanical engineeringindustrial engineeringproduction engineeringelectrical engineeringelectronic engineering, computer sciencematerials management, and operations managementManufacturing engineers' success or failure directly impacts the advancement of technology and the spread of innovation. This field of manufacturing engineering emerged from tool and die discipline in the early 20th century. It expanded greatly from the 1960s when industrialized countries introduced factories with:

1. Numerical control machine tools and automated systems of production.

2. Advanced statistical methods of quality control:

3. Industrial robots on the factory floor, introduced in the late 1970s: These computer-controlled welding arms and grippers could perform simple tasks such as attaching a car door quickly and flawlessly 24 hours a day. This cut costs and improved production speed.


Department Vision:
Basically, the developed societies cannot be measured only by buying and using the recent technology, but also it depends mainly on the capacity of that society both on productive and creative needs, specifically in the modern industrial and technical aspects. Since the creation is a different subject to the application and because of lack of manufacturers in the Kurdistan region, the graduated manufacturing engineers can fulfill the existing gap. Accordingly, the vision of the Manufacturing Department to be summarized as: “the graduates from the Manufacturing Engineering Department will take part on moving the Kurdish industry forward.


Department Mission:
Basically, the developed societies cannot be measured by buying and using recent technology only. However, it depends mainly on the ability of that society on productive and creative their needs particularly in modern industrial and technical aspects.
Since the creation is a different subject to the application and because of the lack of manufacturers in the Kurdistan region, the graduated manufacturing engineers can fulfill the existing gap. Accordingly, the vision of the Manufacturing Department can be summarized, as “The graduates from the Manufacturing Engineering Department will take part to move the Kurdish industry forward”.
The rapid progressing in the industrial development and scientific fields nowadays are required to build links between the subjects. The Manufacturing Engineering Department is the strongest link, without it, a very big gap will halt the technology in the country.
The Manufacturing Department when it is opened, it will be the key point for developing the industry in Kurdistan region, as it can be considered as a noticeable attempt to direct the region into an industrial productive modern parallel with the global community.


Learning Outcomes:
Upon completing the undergraduate study program in manufacturing engineering, a graduate should develop scientific concepts (knowledge), critical thinking and problem solving ability, effective communication skills and ethical responsibility with the site.
By the time of graduation, Students should have acquired the following knowledge and skills:


General Skills:

Graduates of the program are expected to demonstrate:
  • An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering. 
  • An ability to identify, formulates, and solves engineering problems. 
  • An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility. 
  • An ability to communicate effectively. 

The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context.
A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in, life-long learning.
An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
The ability to work in one or more significant application domains.



Analytical Skills:
Be recruited as a site engineer at different construction projects.
Work at lab of site investigation to classify soil at any construction project.
Design shallow and deep foundation.
Solve the problems in stabilizing excavations in rock masses.
Work at irrigation project to manage and schedule irrigation interval in effective and economical way.
Design of excavations, slopes, tunnels and shafts.
Work in a team for channel network system design or pipe network design.



Communication Skills:
From the beginning, the department’s head meets the new students to give them information about the department regulations and civil engineer tasks and fields in which they operate or finding jobs. This will help students to:
  • The ability to formulate an engineering statement precisely.
  • The ability to write a coherent engineering report.
  • The ability to present an engineering argument verbally. 


Reading and Research Skills:
  • The ability to research, acquire, use and critically evaluate experimental, numerical and other complex data.
  • The ability to conduct practical experiments/activities to investigate engineering behavior and material properties.
  • Sufficient experience in engineering language and foundation material to be well-prepared to extend one’s engineering knowledge further through independent reading.
  • Exposure to a successful experience in solving construction problems presenting substantial intellectual challenge.

Who Employs Manufacturing Engineer?
Manufacturing engineers are closely connected with engineering and industrial design efforts. Examples of major companies that employ manufacturing engineers in the United States include General Motors CorporationFord Motor Company, Chrysler, Boeing, Gates Corporation and Pfizer. Examples in Europe include Airbus, Daimler, BMW, Fiat, Navistar International, and Michelin Type.



Industries where manufacturing engineers are generally employed include:

Study Method:
The method of study varies from assignments, lectures, tutorials, workshops, quizzes, exams, laboratory reports, essays, oral presentations, and poster design.


Duration:
Four Academic year’s full-time study at the Department of Manufacturing Engineering at Koya University. Normally an academic year starts in Mid-September and ends around Mid-June.


Program Course Modules taught at the Department:
The Department of Manufacturing Engineering offers a well-balanced undergraduate program that supports to develop graduates who are capable of solving problems with fixed and often times limited resources. The application of state of the art skills, a sound understanding of engineering principles, the ability to communicate and preparation for lifelong learning are some of the key areas of focus in the Manufacturing engineering curriculum. At the completion of the undergraduate program, graduates are well equipped to enter the practice or pursue advanced studies in any of the Manufacturing engineering disciplines. The department provides students with the necessary guidance to develop their full potential within the context of their own personal experiences and the expectations of the profession.


Laboratories:
The Manufacturing Engineering Laboratories contain equipment and facilities to support research and teaching in mechanics of materials, theory of machines, thermo-fluid, strength of materials, control, rapid manufacturing, micro- fabrication, comport aided manufacturing programming & computer applications.

شێوازه‌كانی خوێندن جوراوجۆرن و بریتین له‌ ئه‌رك پێسپاردن و وانه‌و و وانه‌ی تایبه‌تی و وركشۆپ و كورته‌ تاقیكردنه‌وه‌و تاقیكردنه‌وه‌و ڕاپۆرتی تاقیگه‌ و وتارنووسین و پریزه‌نته‌یشن و دروستكردنی پۆسته‌ر. 


ماوه‌ی خوێندن: 
ماوه‌ی خوێندن له‌م به‌شه‌ چوار ساڵه‌ به‌ ده‌وامی ته‌واو و ساڵی خوێندن به‌شێوه‌یه‌كی ئاسایی له‌ ناوه‌ڕاستی مانگی ئه‌یلول تا ناوه‌ڕاستی مانگی حوزه‌یران ده‌خایه‌نێ.
