English Text Analysis

This course in Text and Discourse Analysis is designed to help 4th-Year students to be introduced to essential tools and concepts for analyzing one part of language-text and discourse. This course book holds some necessary ideas and techniques in the analysis of text and discourse.
The course covers issues text and discourse analysis deals with. It gives the students an in-depth look into how to use the analytical tools that help to explore these issues.
This course is divided into two semesters. The period of each semester is roughly fifteen weeks. The first semester basically addresses textlinguistics and the major analytical tools adopted in the analysis of text including cohesion and coherence. The second semester is intended to take a primarily linguistic approach to the analysis of discourse. In other words, how addressers construct messages for the addressees, and how they receive them.
By the end of the course students are expected to be well familiar with how texts become coherent, what kinds of cohesive devices are used to cohere texts and discourses. Moreover, students will also be acquainted with linguistic functions and forms of language, planned and unplanned discourse and the prominent approaches to discourse analysis.
