The Course

English Syntax
This course in English Syntax is designed to equip 4th Year students of English Department with the essential tools necessary to investigate the structure of the English sentence as the study of Syntax is an integral part in the curricula of the Department and a requirement for achieving BA in English language. The course deals with the English sentence structure. It gives the students an in-depth look into the syntactic rules governing the construction of well-formed clauses and sentences, thus developing their sensitivity to many aspects of sentence production, a capacity required of a serious EFL. This course is divided into two semesters. The period of each semester is roughly fifteen weeks. The first semester basically addresses the elementary knowledge about sentence structure, its components and functions. The second semester is intended to shed light on more intricate subjects such as the noun phrase, article usage, case, semantic consideration of certain elements, reduction and the complex sentence. By the end of the course students are expected to be well familiar with how grammatical sentences are produced and what complexities are involved in an English sentence.
