The Course

It is significant for the students of English at this stage of their academic education, I believe, to acquaint themselves with some historical facts related to the development of the English novel. As the nineteenth century itself is commonly known as the age of novel, the students, in this course, are required to deepen their knowledge of the of the most prominent movements, figures, and events that led to the development of the novel to such distinguished genre.

This course falls into two semesters, each of which is normally of fifteen weeks. Two novels have been carefully  chosen to be analyzed and discussed in details: Far From the Madding Crowd  by Thomas Hardy and Washington Square by Henry James. The two authors have been deliberately selected in the light of the huge influence which their works cast on the successive novelists, whether in form, character, style, and so on.
