Welcome to St. Joseph the Worker Council #15136

The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic family fraternal service organization with 1.8 million members. It provides members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, their communities, families and young people.  St. Joseph the Worker Council 15136 proudly serves the communities of St. Andrew and Saints Cosmas and Damian in Sumner and Orting Washington.

Message from the Grand Knight...

  • First of all I wish to congratulate our newest Council brother, Daniel Wolf, proposed by Deputy Grand Knight Jerry Boardway. We had 17 members attending the meeting; several of our degree officers were not present due to work schedules.  District Deputy Joe Schamer conducted the 1st Degree in the absence of John Higgins, Youth Chairman Dirk took the Chancellor part, and Eugene Buckmeier was Inside Guard for Ron Hurst. Many of you have heard that our Brother Ron Hurst was hospitalized with a mass on his brain. After 7 hours of surgery Ron came through with flying colors. The mass was benign. It was good to see him up and around, but let us keep him in our prayers.

Some of our members have been attending the “40” Days for Life in Tacoma. It is so important to show people what the Knights of Columbus stand for. Against any form of destroying God’s creations.

The Rally for Religious Freedom was held March 23, at Tollefson Plaza in Tacoma with several Knights and families from our council. We were proud to have Father Jack Shrum conclude the rally with a prayer.

Saturday March 24th, Casey O’Neil and Justin Thompson advanced to the 2nd. and 3rd Degree, congratulations to both.

March 26th the “Passion According to St. Luke” was performed at St. Andrew church.  What an inspirational performance it was!  I want to thank the brother Knights who helped setup and dismantle the staging for this performance.

At the March 12th business meeting Trustee Virgil Hedlund read a list of proposed officers for the 2012-2013 fraternal year. Grand Knight John stated he hopes each of the elected officers will move up to the next position. The nomination for officers will remain open at the April 9th meeting.  Please attend and be willing to be nominated.  The election of officers will be at the May 14th meeting. It is very important to have brother Knights step up to being officers or committee chairman. Deputy Grand Knight, Gerald Boardway will need your support.

Grand Knight John has asked Louis Smith to spearhead the Pennies for Heaven drive in April and Louis will need your help on that weekend so be ready to step up when he calls you to help.

Each month I have the pleasure of sending out Birthday and Wedding anniversaries notices. Birthdays in the month of April: Brian Balough, Rocky Bisogno, Dean Carmichael, Wheeler Green, John Mergens, Ted Nichols, and Bill Wilson.  Anniversaries in April are: Joe and Dian McQuade, Joe and Lydia Ostle, Brent and Ana Pedersen, Jason and Toleen Rocks. Congratulation to all.

My thanks go out to all our Brother Knights.

    John Mergens
    Grand Knight

  • Tootsie Rolls for Special Olympics Our council participated in the first annual Tootsie Roll program October 7, 8, and 9, to raise money for Washington Special Olympics and the ARC of Pierce County which serve the intellectually disabled community. Many Brother Knights turned out for the effort along with some friends and family. We raised funds in front of Wal-Mart – Bonney Lake Oct. 7, Albertson’s – Bonney Lake Oct. 8-9 and Fred Meyer – Sumner all three days. The leftover Tootsie Rolls were sold after the all Masses on Oct. 15-16 at St. Andrew. We raised $5,081.00, after expenses, which will be donated to the two charities, 50 / 50. Many of the Brother Knights that were worried about trying to solicit ...

  • 40 Days for Life As part of the 40 Days for Life campaign, brother Knights from the St. Joseph the Worker Council participated in a vigil in front of Planned Parenthood in Tacoma on April 14th. Those that could not attend the vigil participated by spending the day in prayer and fasting. 40 Days for Life takes a determined, peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their own neighborhoods, for their own friends and families. It puts into action a desire to cooperate with God in the carrying out of His plan for the end of abortion in America.
