2nd Quarter Book Reports: Speech
Due November 25, 2013
Your job this quarter is to research a topic that is somehow related to your book. The topic needs to be one which is closely tied to the story. For example, you may want to find information on the Civil Rights Movement if you read the book, Summer of Kings. Other ideas include football for The Million Dollar Throw or Pop, rodeo riding for A Small White Scar, mythology for Sea of Monsters, coin collecting for Double Eagle, child labor laws for Counting on Grace, shark attacks in the U.S. for Shark Girl, etc. Be creative.
Once you have read your book, you will need to consider any topics that have greatly influenced the characters and conflict of your book. You will need to find two resources that informed you on this topic. One of your resources may be the encyclopedia. You may use your text books from other classes or check out books from the library. You may also use the internet to educate yourself. We will be working in the computer lab on the following days: November 16, November 19, and November 20, 2012. Plan to have yourself organized and ready to work.
Once you have learned all you can from your resources, you
will compose a 3-5 minute speech about the topic. Making sure that your speech is between 3-5
minutes is very important. Your grade will be dropped by 10 points
for each minute short and by 10 points for being over the time limit. For example, if your speech is 2:50
your grade will be dropped ten points, and if the speech is 1:50 your grade
will be dropped an additional ten points.
Practice your speech to be sure that it is within the time limit. Remember that when you are nervous you may
talk faster, so plan to be well within the limits. Also, be sure to follow the scoring guide.
See the attachments below for outline and scoring guide.
