Volunteer and Partnership Program Coordination
Client(s): NorthStar Technology Corp/USDA Forest Service, Angeles National Forest (ANF)
Year of Completion: 2014
The USDA Forest Service relies on dedicated volunteers and partners to help serve the millions of annual visitors to the Angeles National Forest and care for its valuable natural resources. Following the devastating Station Fire in 2009, an unprecedented upsurge of new volunteers came to the Forest to help with the fire recovery effort. KJ Peterson Consulting was hired under NorthStar Technology Corps subcontracts spanning 4 years to develop a Forest-wide program to coordinate and maximize the contributions of the many new volunteers and partners. The company unified Forest-wide policies for managing volunteers across three ranger districts, coordinated volunteer projects with other Forest programs and priority projects, designed a web-based recruitment system and volunteer project directory, brought consistency to volunteer application/agreement processes, and developed a virtual volunteer training program. At the conclusion of our subcontracts, annual volunteer hours had increased by 74%, from 43 to 75 thousand hours, valued at $1.7 million.
