After a first pass of this feature, users should be able to share:
-- from the profile / recent activity area (at the bottom of http://www.khanacademy.org/profile)
-- from a video page
-- from the profile / badge area
-- from the new badge notification
In general, this feature should give rise to a consistent and unobtrusive sharing control. The details of how it looks, how the user interacts, and how it is implemented are all subject to your interpretation.
-- Judging from the videos' comments/discussion area, our KA and personal blog comments, our Google groups, and even our bug tracker, users are already finding ways to share their positive energy.
-- More people sharing, more people caring! Leveraging social media is so in right now!
In case you're not familiar with all these different parts of KA, here are screenshots of what they look like now.
Share from the profile / recent activity area (at the bottom of http://www.khanacademy.org/profile)
from a video page
-- Surely you've seen a video on KA!
from the profile / badge area
from the new badge notification
Consistent wording (simply suggested)
-- Badges -- "Earned the Going Supersonic badge on Khan Academy http://khanacademy.org"
-- Exercises -- "Answered 6 Exponents 1 problems on Khan Academy http://khanacademy.org"
-- Videos -- "Learned about Patterns in Sequences on Khan Academy http://www.khanacademy.org/video/patterns-in-sequences-1"
If sharing on Twitter:
-- Swap Khan Academy out for @khanacademy
-- Suggest follow @khanacademy after tweet
If sharing on Facebook:
-- Set the right properties so that it displays pretty. If badge, do a nice badge icon. If video, share the video (or a reasonable looking screenshot or video icon). If an exercise, perhaps our KA tree or maybe the exercise star icon.
-- User chooses between different services (can be words, links, buttons, icons, whatever looks best)
-- Click brings up service-specific modal window, textfield pre-populated with message like "Earned the Going Supersonic badge on Khan Academy at http://khanacademy.org"
-- Jason had sent me a mock-up of how the playlist dropdown will look in iOS. Should be something similar to or consistent with that.
Unobtrusive. Share control appears on row hover. (If it's too subtle, we will def iterate.)
Share control appears on badge hover (both profile's badges and badge notifications), with entire badge as click target.
Add share control on video page, next to points/download/exercise icons. Don't worry about the last bullet point that I scribbled there -- we'll just want to add the one share button as above.
-- Helpful links:
-- I was looking at something like: https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Drbt51hXmzig&t=Functions+%28part+4%29 From what I can see it, it lets you watch the video in-line (er, in-feed?) which is cool, but its documentation has since disappeared from my searchable world. This link is not ideal for us anyway since we would want to point back to KA's video page not youtube.
Next todo is to read up on how to send email, which can be unfortunate without the right precautions. http://docs.python.org/library/email-examples.html
