Basic Information

What is PBIS?

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a school-wide     approach to teaching social,            emotional, and behavioral skills.  A common set of expectations is defined and applied to each setting within the school, such as the bathroom, hallway, classrooms, and cafeteria.

Is this a new concept in     education?

No.  PBIS originated in Oregon in the 1990’s.  There are now more than 13,000 schools implementing PBIS across the country.  In Kewaskum, all schools are moving toward a system of positive behavioral supports.  KHS is implementing PBIS in conjunction with the Wisconsin Department of Public  Instruction.

What are the benefits of PBIS?

All students and staff understand the     behavioral expectations for each area of  the school.

Positive Behavior

PBIS emphasizes the prevention of      problem behaviors through the teaching and acknowledgement of positive           behaviors.  Explicitly teaching                expectations results in a greater number of students understanding and following    expectations.

More Time Spent Engaged in Instruction

Less time spent addressing problem         behaviors means more time engaged in  academic instruction.

Improved School Climate

While problem behaviors are still           addressed, increased emphasis is placed on acknowledging good choices.  This creates a more positive tone in the school.
